Dan Grades

Black Belt and Beyond (Dan Grades)

Once you reach Shodan (1st Dan), you earn your first black belt — but it’s not the end. In fact, “Shodan” literally means “beginner step.” From here, the ranks are called Dan grades, and they continue based on skill, time, contribution, and experience.

At 6th Dan, black belts are traditionally replaced with a red-and-white paneled belt (also called kohaku obi). This is a mark of seniority and honor.

At 9th and 10th Dan, the belt becomes solid red. These ranks are extremely rare and often honorary.
